Peter Dench: Workshop Leader
Dench works primarily in the editorial, portraiture and advertising fields of photography. A keen and astute observer of human nature and in particular some of the quirkier aspects of life. His distinctive, strong reportage style, predominantly in color, has guaranteed regular commissions from a range of respected national and international clients including, among others; STERN, TIME, The New Yorker, The Sunday Times Magazine, Telegraph Magazine, Weekend Guardian, Men’s Health and Tatler.
Dench has achieved a World Press Photo Award in the People in the News stories category and participated in the coveted World Press Joop Swart Masterclass. In 2012, Dench placed 2nd in Advertising at the Sony World Photography Awards. Solo exhibitions include, LoveUK, in Cardiff UK, and England Uncensored, at the 2011 Visa pour I’Image festival of photojournalism in France and the Periscopio Festival, Spain.
Dench is contributing editor to the photography and film making magazine, ‘Hungry Eye’, which publishes his monthly column, the often laugh out loud, Dench Diary.
Dench’s first book ‘England Uncensored’ will be published in May 2012.
What is the workshop about?
Dench believes photography should be fun and humour powerful tool in delivering a message. The workshop will explore irony and humour in British life and society; a brief will be emailed one week before the workshop and Dench will be available online one week after the workshop to answer any questions or concerns and deliver further feedback if required.
Who is the workshop for?
Enthusiasts of Britain, admirers of the lighter side of life. This workshop is suitable for beginner and intermediate photographers in possession of a digital SLR camera.
The workshop will be based at WCG and lunch will be served both days and is included in the ticket price.
Schedule
Saturday 14th July
AM. Dench will give a presentation of his work and individually assess the work and capabilities of each participant and see the objectives for the weekend.
PM. A street walk around the centre of Leeds looking to capture the humour and irony evident in the everyday of British society.
Sunday 15th July
AM. A further opportunity to photograph around Leeds or at an event (TBD).
PM. Dench will gather everyone around to assess the work produced and give critical feedback with his unique eye.
What can you expect to gain?
Working closely with Dench, participants can expect to improve their approach to photographing in public spaces. The workshop is designed to show how to shoot with speed, confidence, respect, humour and above all, to have fun. Dench is an expert in creating bright clear photographs whatever the weather often using flash. He will demonstrate how to document the ordinary in a new and exciting way, how to develop strong themes within your work, and how to build a project and edit with skill.
